Why we're building a dashcam that keeps your footage in India

The moment that made us start DashMan wasn't a crash — it was reading where a popular dashcam app sends its footage.

The moment that started DashMan wasn't a crash. It was reading where a popular dashcam app sends its footage — and realising the answer was a cloud vendor outside India that appeared nowhere on the box, the listing, or the app-store page.

The promise every dashcam makes

Every dashcam brand in India sells the same promise: proof when you need it. It's a good promise. On roads that saw 4,87,707 accidents in 2024, a clip that shows what actually happened is worth having. But almost none of these brands will tell you where that proof lives once it's recorded.

What we found when we looked

When we traced the network traffic of a popular bundled dashcam app, the footage path led to cloud infrastructure outside India. No malice required — it's just the default in a category built on rebadged OEM hardware and white-labelled apps. The problem is that the default is silence: your drives, your home, your workplace, uploaded somewhere you can't name and can't hold accountable.

We didn't think that default was acceptable for a device whose entire job is to be trustworthy.

What we're building

So we're building the dashcam we wanted to buy: one camera, done properly.

The wedge, stated plainly

Most dashcams ask you to trust a cloud you can't see. DashMan keeps your footage on your phone, in India, and keeps footage in India if you ever choose to back it up. That's the whole pitch. Everything else — sensor, app, price — we intend to get right, but this is the part we refuse to compromise.

Where we are, honestly

DashMan is pre-launch. The hardware and app are in testing, and we'd rather state real specs once than promise numbers we haven't earned. If that matters to you, join the waitlist — you'll be first when it ships, and you'll get the details before anyone else. If you want to see how we stack up against the incumbents, read how DashMan compares to other dashcams.
